Tests that can
Although the diagnosis of infertility might seem overwhelming, and the chances of treatment might seem bleak, there are many infertility tests that can be done to analyse the root causes for infertility, such as:
1 / History and Physical Examination
Smoking not only increases the risk of infertility in both genders, but it can also undermine the effects of any fertility treatments. In a female, smoking can damage the cervix and the fallopian tubes. It is also believes that smoking ages ovaries and tends to deplete eggs prematurely.
Smoking during pregnancy can also increase the chances of a miscarriage. In a male, they can affect sperm quality, and quantity too. Passive smoking can also affect infertility greatly, so if you are a smoker, or live around a smoker, it is recommended to change this lifestyle aspect before attempting to conceive.
2 / Transvaginal Ultrasound
A transvaginal ultrasound is when an ultrasound wand is placed in to the vagina, which then emits soundwaves which help the doctor in seeing images of the ovaries and uterus. An ultrasound would help detect any abnormalities in the uterus that may hinder the pregnancy process, such as polyps, fibroids, cysts etc. The ultrasound also helps the doctor identify the overall number of eggs available for any further treatment.
3 / Laboratory Testing
After the previous two tests have been conducted, blood tests might be prescribed by your physician. These tests may measure hormones, mineral content etc.
Diagnose Infertility
4 / Hysterosalpingogram
A hysterosalpingogram, or HSG, is a series of X- rays of a woman’s fallopian tubes and uterus. A dye is injected through the vagina, and helps detect any blockages or defects.
This test further aids in evaluating abnormalities in the fallopian tube, and helps analyse fallopian tube abnormalities. It is often conducted after a menstrual period. Most issues that are detected on this test can be easily remedied using surgical methods.
5 / Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy consists of a thin tube, with a camera, being inserted into the cervix and the uterus. This provides the doctor with a clear view of any problems, and can also aid in collecting tissue samples.
6 / Semen Analysis
Semen Analysis evaluates male factor infertility. The four main factors analysed in this test would be semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm movement and sperm shape. If the semen analysis does not give satisfactory results, a further evaluation would be conducted by a reproductive urologist.
